12. If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

The consequences of our conduct, good or bad, chiefly reflect on ourselves. (Chapter 16:26.) God cannot be profited by us (Job 22:2, 3. Psalm 16:2. Luke 17:10); and he is infinitely above our injury (Job 35:6, 7.) The wise man's light is a blessing to the Church and to the world. (Matthew 5:14, 16.) But he is wise for himself — for his own advantage. (Chapter 3:13-18; 24:3. Ecclesiastes 8:1.) The scorner is a grief to his minister, and a stumbling to his church. But he hurts no one so much as himself. He alone shall bear it. (Chapter 8:36. Ezekiel 18:20. Luke 7:30.) A surety indeed there is. But his scorning rejects him. He sinks therefore into perdition under a millstone of guilt without remedy. (Chapter 29:1. Hebrews 10:28, 29. Leviticus 24:15.) This then is the ordinance of God. “Every man shall bear his own burden. Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap:” life or death — a double harvest — for time and for eternity. (Galatians 6:5, 7, 8.)

26 ¶ He that laboureth laboureth for himself; for his mouth craveth it of him. {He...: Heb. The soul of him that} {craveth...: Heb. boweth unto him}

Job 22:2, 3
2 Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself? {as he...: or, if he may be profitable, doth his good success depend thereon?} 3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?

Psalm 16:2
2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee;

Luke 17:10
10 So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

Job 35:6, 7
6 If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him? 7 If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what receiveth he of thine hand?

Matthew 5:14, 16
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Proverbs 3:13-18
13 ¶ Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. {that getteth...: Heb. that draweth out understanding} 14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. 15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. 16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. 17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. 18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

Proverbs 24:3
3 ¶ Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established:

Ecclesiastes 8:1
1 ¶ Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed. {the boldness: Heb. the strength}

Proverbs 8:36
36 But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Ezekiel 18:20
20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

Luke 7:30
30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him. {rejected: or, frustrated} {against...: or, within themselves}

Proverbs 29:1
1 ¶ He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy. {He...: Heb. A man of reproofs}

Hebrews 10:28, 29
28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

Leviticus 24:15
15 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Whosoever curseth his God shall bear his sin.

Galatians 6:5, 7, 8
5 For every man shall bear his own burden. 7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
